Commentary on Luke by Cyril of Alexandria | Sermon 29

Image
The Lord said, “And as you wish that men would do to you, do  so to them” (Luke 6:31) It was probable however that the holy apostles would perchance think these things difficult to put into practice: He therefore Who knoweth all things takes the natural law of self-love as the arbiter of what any one would wish to obtain from another. Shew thyself, He says, to others such as thou wishest them to be towards thee. If thou wouldest have them harsh and unfeeling, fierce and wrathful, revengeful and ill-disposed, shew thyself also such: but if on the contrary thou wouldst have them kind and forgiving, do not think it a thing intolerable to be thyself so. And in the case of those so disposed, the law is perchance unnecessary, because God writes upon our hearts the knowledge of His will: "for in those days, saith the Lord, I will surely give My laws into their mind, and will write them on their heart." The Lord said, “Be merciful,  even as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:31)...

Continue Forward With the Love of Christ

Image
St. Paul writes to the Corinthians in today’s epistle reading, “Brethren, be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Cor. 16:13) These words are fitting for my last Sunday serving at the Cathedral for they reflect my feelings toward the Cathedral community that I have come to love and have been honored to serve. While I have not served at the Cathedral for as long as I expected, I have strived to encourage the faithful to be vigilant in faith striving to grow in understanding and relationship with Christ and each other and to express this faith through action. This is the foundation of an Orthodox Christian community. The purpose of gathering is not to bolster ourselves, but to strengthen one another in understanding and expressing our faith. Striving to grow and to express our faith is not easy. There are personal traits or feelings, as well as aspects of relationships, that can affect spiritual growth in both pos...

Saint Spotlight: Martyr Phokas the Gardener of Sinope

Image
St. Phokas came from Sinope and his only possessions were a garden which he cultivated with great diligence. His income from the garden was very small. But since he was a good steward and frugal in his needs, he would always have something for the poor. St. Phokas studied the Holy Scriptures with pleasure. He even told those who saw him studying that our soul is also a garden, which requires care, so that it does not produce thorns and thistles. The gardener Phokas also desired that everyone's souls should become spiritual gardens. So wherever he could, he contributed to their purification and cultivation. While he was selling vegetables and fruits, he spoke words of great spiritual profit at the same time. Not only did he benefit Christians, but he also converted many pagans. At that time, the idolaters were persecuting Christians. Therefore, when it became known that the gardener Phokas was a Christian, the rulers sent soldiers to arrest him. Since the Saint's home was near...

Martyr Porphyrius the Actor (Sept. 15, 2024)

Image
The Holy Martyr Porphyrios suffered during the reign of Julian the Apostate (361-363). Porphyrios was an actor and on the Emperor’s birthday he was performing in a play at the theater, where he was supposed to mock the Mystery of Holy Baptism. During the play Porphyrios immersed himself in the water and said: “The servant of God, Porphyrios, is baptized in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” By the grace of God, which he received after speaking these words, he emerged from the water and confessed himself a Christian before the entire audience. Julian ordered him to be tortured, and after being subjected to torture, he was beheaded. This took place in the city of Ephesus in the year 361. Saint Porphyrios the actor (September 15) should not be confused with Saint Porphyrios the actor who lived during the reign of Aurelian (270-275), and is commemorated on November 4. Taking Up Our Cross

Image
One hundred years ago plus one day, the Annunciation community celebrated the ‘Thyranixia’, that is the opening of the doors of the Cathedral. Though, at that time, the community had been serving the Greek Orthodox faithful of Boston for over thirty years, this date celebrates the dedication and faithfulness of the community. The parish moved from their previous location to the corner of Ruggles and Parker streets with the hope and expectation of serving the faithful in Boston for years to come. The years to come have totaled over 100 and the community has seen times of great activity, ministry, and growth, along with periods of a slower life and challenges. Some of the challenges have drawn the community closer together, some reconciled disagreements, and others caused decline. This movement, however, is the life of a family or community. There are always times of celebration and times of sorrow. What we face as the Cathedral community is how to face the challenges of today...
