This morning we gather and see on the horizon a day set aside by our nation, Thanksgiving Day. Some of us may be traveling, others may be welcoming guests and family to our homes. This day has come to mean a myriad of different things for different people. In its simplest form, for many it has become simply a time to enjoy a turkey dinner and prepare for the upcoming holiday. For others, this day has become a time to be with family and friends or watch a favorite sport. And yet for others, this day, like many holidays, is a day in which we long for loved ones who are no longer with us. Many take a few moments to think about or verbalize their thanks for that which they have or experienced during the past year. Isn’t this how we idealize the gathering of the pilgrims on Thanksgiving. They felt so blessed that they had survived and were learning how to thrive in a newly settled land. What is the Church? This is a question that is often asked of me by others, but more importantly, it is a question that I often ask myself. I believe that there are two ways to answer this question. The Church is a building in which believers in Jesus Christ gather. This is the most common way people look understand Church. Historically, believers first gathered in people’s homes as we read in the book of Acts. As the numbers of believers grew and the persecutions of the early Christians subsided, the faithful began gathering in dedicated spaces and over time the Church as we know it today was established and understood as the house of God. The space is sanctified by the grace of the Holy Spirit and becomes a place of joy, a place of celebration, a place of consolation, a place of healing, a place of reconciliation, and a place of worship and prayer. The Church is her people. We can have a building, call it a church, but without the faithful, it is just brick and mortar or wood ...

  But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Mt 6:6) Often, we associate prayer with gathering together in worship. We come to church for the Liturgy or for another sacrament and we pray together. Finding support in worship and prayer is important because collectively we feel more secure and stronger in prayer. We have the words there of prayer for us in the services. This is important for the community as a whole and for us as individuals. However, prayer is not only communal and it is not only words, it is also private, as we hear in the gospel of Matthew. The call to, “go into your room”, sets the stage for personal prayer and developing a deeper personal relationship with God.   In last week’s reflection I wrote about how St. Paul spoke to the believers in Galatia about how their faith sets them apart from the ordinary. He used his life as an example, how he had persecuted the followers of Christ and how, through the grace of God, he became a true believer in Christ. St. Paul’s life was transformed. The one who was zealous about the Law and the Prophets, now understands how Christ came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets. This understanding is what transforms his life. He finds freedom through the grace of the Holy Spirit to fully devote himself to Christ. Finding himself as the voice of Christ to the gentiles, he comes to understand the relationship he shares with Christ. In today’s Epistle reading, taken again from his Letter to the Galatians, he proclaims, “For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh...

The Ladies Philopthochos Society thanks the community for their donations to the Operation Classroom/Back to School initiative. The donated supplies were delivered to the Hennigan School, a K-8 public school in Jamaica Plain, at the end of August in time for the start of the school year. The school was deeply appreciative for the new supplies, which will help set up students for academic success. Operation Classroom is a National Philoptochos initiative where chapters throughout the country offer support to teachers and students in underfunded or underserved schools. We are proud that the Cathedral community was able to participate this year! Additionally, thank you to the following Philoptochos sisters for serving dinner at the New England Center & Home for Veterans during the month of October: Fran Giannakopoulos, Sophia Koutris, Denise Nikas, Angela Papadopoulos, and Penny Tsaras. We look forward to serving again in 2024.
